Newt Gingrich cries while recalling late mother

(AP) ? Newt Gingrich choked up and wiped away tears Friday while recalling his late mother's struggle with depression and mental illness.

Speaking at an event with mothers in Des Moines, Iowa, the former House speaker said his focus on brain science issues stems directly from "dealing with the real problems of real people in my family."

"And so it's not a theory. It's, in fact, my mother," he said as he wiped away tears.

Kit Gingrich died in 2003 at age 77. Gingrich said she spent her final years in a long-term care facility suffering from depression, bipolar disease and gradually acquired physical ailments.

The moment was reminiscent of Hillary Rodham Clinton's teary-eyed response to a question just before the 2008 Democratic primary in New Hampshire. That rare, emotional response by the former first lady was credited with humanizing her in the eyes of voters. She went on to pull off a win in the state.

After showing his emotions, the cerebral Gingrich said he does "policy much easier than he does personal."

His wife, Callista, and two daughters, were in the audience.

"Callista will tell you I get teary-eyed every time we sing Christmas carols," Gingrich said.

Gingrich has fallen in recent Iowa polls, with the state's caucuses just several days away. He is in the midst of a 22-stop bus tour across the state.

Samsung Reconsiders Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade for Galaxy S

Samsung, the Korean smartphone giant, on Friday announced on one of its promotional blogs that it had dropped the idea of porting Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade to its Galaxy S smartphone or the 7-inch Galaxy Tablet. Since then, widespread arguments and heated debates on the issue have been escalating amongst the Android user community.

Washington's minimum wage jumps to $9.04 per hour on Sunday

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Washington state's minimum wage increases by 37 cents to $9.04 an hour starting on New Year's Day.

While the state's current rate of $8.67 an hour is already the highest state minimum wage in the nation, a few cities, like San Francisco, have their own laws and have higher rates. San Francisco's current rate of $9.92 jumps to $10.24 on Sunday, making it the first city in the nation to top a $10 minimum wage. The federal minimum wage is $7.25.

Washington is among a handful of states where the minimum wage will increase Sunday.

Washington's minimum wage is adjusted each year for inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index for the past 12 months, which is up more than 4 percent. The yearly recalculation is required by Initiative 688, which was approved by Washington voters in 1998.

Gingrich goes after rivals despite positive pledge

(AP) ? No more Mr. Nice Guy. Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich lambasted two of his top GOP rivals on Tuesday, despite his claim that he's sticking to a positive campaign.

Gingrich said he couldn't vote for Ron Paul if he were to become the GOP nominee and called the Texas congressman's views "totally outside the mainstream of every decent American."

In the same interview on CNN, Gingrich also offered a testy rebuke to Mitt Romney, saying that if Romney wants to run a negative campaign attacking Gingrich he should at least be "man enough to own it."

The sharp comments come as the former House speaker has seen his support slip in Iowa amid a barrage of attack ads that have cast him as an ethically challenged Washington insider.

Scrambling to regain momentum, Gingrich and a political action committee supporting him each took the wraps off television spots that will run statewide in Iowa.

The PAC Winning the Future is composed of former Gingrich staffers. The ad, its first, includes a broadside at Romney, although the former Massachusetts governor is never named.

"The Republican establishment wants to pick our candidate," the ad says. "When a principled conservative took the lead, they outspent Newt Gingrich 20 to 1, attacking him with falsehoods. ... Don't let the liberal Republican establishment pick our candidate."

Gingrich has said he will disavow any independent political action committee that spends money on negative ads. His own spot, funded by his campaign coffers, focuses on jobs and economic growth.

The former Georgia congressman launched a 22-stop "Jobs and Prosperity" bus tour, which kicked off Tuesday in Dubuque, in the northeast corner of Iowa. But he found himself on the defensive again on health care as a new memo surfaces that showed he had once praised the law enacted in Massachusetts when Romney was governor.

In an April 2006 memo from Gingrich's Atlanta-based Center for Health Transformation, he called it "the most exciting development of the past few weeks." He also said the law had "tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system."

The memo also noted shortcomings in the Massachusetts law. Gingrich said the state's many regulations prohibited insurers from offering cheaper plans that would make coverage affordable. But he went on to note that that "we agree entirely with Gov. Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100 percent insurance coverage for all Americans."

Gingrich and others have argued that the Massachusetts law, widely seen as the model for President Barack Obama's national health overhaul, undercuts Romney's conservative credentials. Gingrich also has faced questions about his past support for an individual health care mandate, anathema to conservatives.

A Gingrich spokesman said Gingrich's comments are "old news that has been covered already."

"Newt previously supported a mandate for health insurance and changed his mind after seeing its effects," said the spokesman, R.C. Hammond. "The real question is why 'Mitt the Massachusetts Moderate' won't admit that health insurance mandates don't work."

The Gingrich memo was first reported Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal.

China arrests executives in insider trading crackdown (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? China has arrested former executives at two brokerages on charges of insider trading, the securities watchdog said, as part of a crackdown on market malpractice that the new head of the agency has said will be one of his top priorities.

The China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) detailed on its website four cases of market manipulation and insider trading that it has investigated, including two that led to the arrests of former executives at Southwest Securities Co Ltd (600369.SS) and Northeast Securities Co Ltd (000686.SZ).

The cases are the latest in an increasingly high-profile campaign by CSRC chief Guo Shuqing to stamp out rampant wrongdoing in the country's stock market, which has languished despite the country's nearly double-digit economic growth.

In one case, Qin Xuan, a Northeast Securities manager who advised on the restructuring of a Shenzhen-listed pharmaceutical firm, used the information he obtained in that process to trade the company's stock, and also leaked the information to a friend.

In another case, Ji Minbo, former vice president at Southwest Securities, gained 20 million yuan ($3.2 million) by using information that was not publicly disclosed to trade more than 40 stocks from 2009 to 2011, the CSRC said.

"No matter how concealed illegal practices are, inside traders will eventually be punished by law," the CSRC said in the statement that detailed Qin's case.

The other two cases on which the agency published details involved securities consultants using commentators, research reports and media to talk up stocks they own before selling the securities to make a profit.

China has been stepping up its crackdown against illegal trading activities and tightening supervision against fund managers, brokerages, consultants and executives of listed companies in a bid to build confidence in a stock market where illegal trading activities have been rampant.

In August, former stock analyst Wang Jianzhong was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined 125 million yuan, on top of having illicit earnings of the same amount confiscated, becoming China's first convicted stock market manipulator.

Guo, the former China Construction Bank chairman who became CSRC chief in late October, said in a speech in early December that the regulator would adamantly crack down on accounting fraud, insider trading and other illegal activities.

Earlier this month, the agency exposed the country's biggest-ever case of stock market manipulation that involved an investment company, Guangdong Zhonghengxin, orchestrating "pump-and-dump" schemes related to 552 stocks, out of which it made 426 million yuan.

The CSRC has also recently published rules that would require listed companies to keep records on anyone who may have access to price-sensitive information.

Google Chrome Skill Layout

I've played Star Legends a couple of times on google chrome and everything looks better/clearer/bigger but one big factor is how you use the skills.

On touchscreens, you can just press and its done in a blink of an eye......but on the computer you have to click with the mouse which takes a lot more effort/time.

My suggestion is to make it so that you press a key for eg. the letter P to use a skill. This wil be much easier and very helpful when in PVP since time

is very valuable. This will close the gap between mobile devices and desktops.

Thanks for hearing meh out xD

For Jews and Christians, a holiday 'season of rapprochement'

The Hanukkah and Christmas holidays coincide amid a season of Jewish and Christian bridge-building, as evidenced, in part, by a recent surprise bestseller on Amazon.

This year?s Hanukkah and Christmas?seasons?coincide amid what many scholars and religious figures alike are calling a?notable period of reconciliation and bridge-building between Jewish and?Christian communities.

?The Jewish Annotated New Testament,??written by Jewish scholars and warmly received by top religious scholars?and general readers alike, was a surprise bestseller earlier this month, selling out on Amazon, and is still hovering among the top recommended reads.

Co-editor Amy-Jill Levine, a Vanderbilt University Bible scholar, says the book, which puts the writing and writers of the New Testament into a Jewish context, has led already to substantial conversations between Jews and Christians, including seminars and high-profile interfaith meetings.

This caps at least a decade?of mutual Christian and Jewish outreach, during which? The Institute for Christian and Jewish Studies in Baltimore sponsored an event that led to?what Professor Levine calls a remarkable statement,?entitled ?Speak Truth? and signed by nearly 170 rabbis and Jewish professors.

The document, first published in The New York Times, affirms eight major areas of agreement between Christians and Jews, including?the?assertion that both accept the moral principles of the Torah,?both seek authority?from the same book and both believe in the same God.

?Speak Truth,??or ?Dabru Emet? in Hebrew,??was followed up by ?A Sacred Obligation: A Christian Statement on Jews and Judaism,? ? Levine points out.

?This is a season of rapprochement,? says Alan Brill, chair of Jewish-Christian Studies at Seton Hall University, in South Orange, New Jersey. This increased dialogue has been fueled in part by?information from?recent archeological?findings,?including?the Dead Sea scrolls dating back to 1947, finally working its way into mainstream?Jewish and Christian scholarship, points?out Professor Brill.

There have been pivotal, historic moments, such as the decision of the Second Vatican Council ? the three-year gathering (1962-65) to address the Catholic Church?s relationship to the modern world ? to officially absolve the Jewish people for?any?responsibility for the death of Jesus, as well as Christian expressions of support for the state of Israel. These moves have paved the way for greater shared respect for mutual history as well as different traditions.??It is an exciting time,? Brill adds.

Christian scholars share an interest in understanding Jesus in the context of history, says Silviu Bunta, assistant professor of religious studies at the?Catholic University of Dayton in Ohio, who says there is a growing convergence of the current Jewish and Christian understanding of Jesus.

Oil Spill Moves Toward Nigerian Coast

Bill Payment

When:

Where:
sfdsaf,
Cambodia

Royal Dutch Shell confirmed that the deepwater spill occurred on Tuesday during what the company called a ?routine transfer? of crude from a floating storage device in the Bonga oil fields 75 miles offshore to a tanker; a leak in one of the transfer lines caused the spill. The company said that at most about 40,000 barrels had been lost, which would be less than one percent of the oil thought to have spurted from the well beneath the Deepwater Horizon during the catastrophic Gulf of Mexico spill in 2010. The company also said that 50 percent of the oil had already evaporated into the air or been dispersed by wave action. But Peter Idabor, the head of Nigeria?s National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, said the leakage could be three times as large as Shell contends and may be the country?s worst case of oil pollution in 10 years. ?This is potentially NFL jerseys supply a major incident that is likely to affect the environment and the people for a long time,? Mr. Idabor said. The spill also comes just days after Shell received final permission from the Obama administration to start drilling exploratory wells in the highly ecologically sensitive region of the Arctic, a fact not lost on American critics of the drilling. ?It is a reminder, also, that we have no business drilling for oil in the Arctic waters,? said Bob Deans of the Natural Resources Defense Council, a New York-based environmental advocacy group. ?Look at what this oil is doing in Nigeria, then imagine trying to clean it up in waters choked with ice eight months a year, with gale winds and 20-foot seas, in a place a five-day cruise by cutter from the nearest U.S. Coast Guard station, in Kodiak.? Shell has been blamed for many previous oil spills in the Nigerian Niger Delta, where a majority of the population lives in poverty atop some of the world?s richest reserves of oil and gas. A United Nations environmental assessment report released in August NFL jerseys said Shell?s operations were responsible for the contamination of farmlands and rivers in the Ogoni area of the Delta. Environmentalists say many oil spills go unreported, and they have accused the oil companies of deliberately underreporting those that do become public. John Amos, the president of SkyTruth, a nonprofit organization based in West Virginia that provides independent information on environmental catastrophes, said that his group?s analysis of photos and satellite images indicated that Shell?s estimate of the size of the spill off the coast of Nigeria on Tuesday was not far off. ?We believe the spill is consistent with the high end of their estimate,? Mr. Amos said. SkyTruth estimated the size of the slick at 350 square miles. Nigerian lawmakers said Thursday that if the Bonga spill did indeed occur during a routine loading, that would indicate a weakness in operational standards. ?The spill calls for a need to review the standards in the industry,? said Magnus Abbe, the chairman of the Senate committee on petroleum. Shell said late Thursday that remotely operated underwater vehicles had confirmed that the spill was caused by a leak in a ?flexible export line? that linked a tanker to a large floating storage container. David R. Williams, a Shell spokesman, said the company was investigating what caused the leak in the line feeding the tanker, as well as why the leak was not stopped jerseys cheap before so much oil had spilled. Shell has closed down the entire Bonga oil field, a site 75 miles off the coast of Nigeria that normally produces roughly 200,000 barrels of oil and gas a day. Tony Okonedo, a Shell spokesman in Nigeria, said satellite pictures had shown that the overall area covered by the sheen was less than a hundredth of a millimeter thick in most areas and that the company was deploying considerable resources to combat it. Among the tools Shell said it was using were five ships with dispersants, infrared equipment to locate areas in the slick where the sheen may be thicker and mapping of sensitive ecological areas on land and sea so booms could be placed strategically.

Dutch cup match may be replayed after fan incident

By TOBY STERLING

Associated Press

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:19 a.m. ET Dec. 22, 2011

AMSTERDAM (AP) -The Dutch football federation said Thursday it has yet to decide whether to replay a cup match between Ajax and AZ Alkmaar that was halted after a supporter ran onto the field and tried to attack Alkmaar's goalkeeper.

The alert Costa Rican goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado deflected the attack by a 19-year-old fan, tripping him with a karate-like kick. But Alvarado was given a red card for kicking the supporter again in anger twice immediately afterward before the intruder was dragged off by security guards.

Alkmaar coach Gertjan Verbeek ordered his side to walk out in protest rather than play with 10 men and the game was halted in the 36th minute. Ajax was leading 1-0 on a goal by Gregory van der Wiel.

Ajax director Jeroen Slop said the supporter had already been banned from the stadium for a year due to a previous run-in with security guards, but managed to sneak into the cup match with a ticket purchased by a friend. He has now received a lifetime ban from all Ajax matches.

Later Thursday, the Dutch football association rescinded the red card, saying Alvarado's reaction was triggered by the unprovoked attack on him - but adding that referee Bas Nijhuis was acting according to the rules when he sent the goalkeeper off.

The federation said Alvarado's reaction "will not result in a ban."

Opinions were divided about whether Alvarado deserved to be sent off in the first place.

Nijhuis defended the decision, saying that once the supporter was on the ground, he no longer posed a threat.

But Ajax coach Frank de Boer noted that for all Alvarado knew, the supporter could have been carrying a weapon or gotten up to attack again.

"Maybe I would have done the same thing, maybe not," said De Boer, a renowned former defender for Netherlands' national team, of Alvarado's reaction. "But emotionally I do understand it."

The Dutch players' union had demanded that the red card be retracted.

"This cannot lead to a suspension" for Alvarado, said union chief Danny Hesp, arguing that Alvarado's reaction was in self-defense after an unexpected, unprovoked attack. The union "will do everything it can to fight this" decision, he said.

The federation said Thursday it will decide "soon" whether Wednesday's match should be replayed, resumed, or have Ajax declared the winner.

Police are holding the 19-year-old supporter, whose name was not released, on assault charges. Police are also holding 25 other supporters arrested during and after the match. After the early end to the round-of-16 match, Ajax supporters clashed with riot police outside Amsterdam's ArenA stadium.

Alkmaar defended its decision not to continue playing. The team's players "didn't feel safe anymore in this situation," said club director Toon Gerbrands.

In a highly unusual move, the country's justice minister Ivo Opstelten got involved in the debate, saying the attack was "beastly" and that "jerks and nuts don't belong on the field." He added that he thought AZ's Verbeek was right to walk out under the circumstances.

"I have a lot of respect for how he acted," Opstelten said. "Intervene immediately, that warms my heart."

Slop, the Ajax director, apologized for the security lapse, and he said AZ had accepted the apology.

"An incident with one half-wit in a stadium of 40,000 people, you don't have control over that," he said. He said the supporter had "in all likelihood been drinking."

He added that the fan "had made it known that he detests the AZ keeper and that's why he attacked him."

From heterogeneous patient measurements towards earlier diagnosis in Alzheimer's disease

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? European PredictAD project, lead by Principal Scientist Jyrki L?tj?nen from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, has developed a decision support tool for objective diagnostics of Alzheimer's disease. The tool compares measurements of a patient to measurements of other persons available in large databases and provides a simple index about the severity of the disease. The project has shown that the tool improves the accuracy of diagnosis and clinicians' confidence about their decision, making earlier diagnosis possible.

Dementia has been recently identified as a health priority both in Europe and in the USA. Alzheimer's disease, the most common cause of dementia, alone accounts for costs equivalent to about 1% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of the whole world and the number of persons affected will double in the next 20 years. Early diagnosis plays a key role in solving the problem because treatments of this irreversible disease should be started at an early phase to be efficient.

The current guidelines for the diagnostics of Alzheimer's disease emphasize the role of various biomarkers. These biomarkers include measures from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), biomarkers from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and genetic biomarkers in addition to evidenced memory impairment. No single patient measure provides enough information for diagnostics. Currently, clinicians make the final diagnosis by combining heterogeneous measurements with information from interviews of the patient and relatives. This process involves subjective reasoning and requires strong expertise from the clinicians.

Modern hospitals have huge data reserves containing information that nobody has extracted. For example, the hippocampus is a central structure for memory and affected in Alzheimer's disease and brain MRI image databases contain information about the normal variability of the hippocampus in healthy and disased persons. This information can be utilised in diagnostics by systematic mathematical modelling.

PredictAD has designed a totally novel approach for measuring objectively the state of the patient. This decision support system, developed in close collaboration with clinicians, compares patient measurements with measurements of other persons in large databases and provides at the end an index and graphical representation reflecting the state of the patient. The index is a barometer of the disease making grounds for decisions more solid and objective. The graphical representation provides a clinician in glance information about the status of her/his patient compared with hundreds of other persons, some having the disease and some being healthy.

"The PredictAD tool provides a new option to support decision making by providing objective information about the patient," says Prof. Hilkka Soininen from the University of Eastern Finland, leading the clinical validation of the project.

Prof. Gunhild Waldemar from Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet emphasizes the importance of the Alzheimer's disease research: "Successful, early diagnostics combined with the novel drugs under development and early psychosocial care may delay the institutionalization of patients, reducing suffering and the costs to the society. It has been calculated that delaying the onset of the disease by five years would halve all costs of Alzheimer's disease and delaying onset and progression by only one year would reduce the number of Alzheimer's cases by about 10%."

This study was supported by the project "From patient data to personalized healthcare in Alzheimer's disease" (PredictAD) which was supported by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme.

iGloLEDset brings the party to the Kindle Fire, helps you lighten the mood (video)

Back when we first saw what iGloLEDset could do on an iPhone, few would've thought an Amazon tablet would exist today. But it does, and let's face it: the Kindle Fire could benefit from a colorful personality lift. You can make it happen if you're willing to take on the $299 price tag that's slapped on a set of remotely controlled LEDs. Aside from its app introduction to the Fire, nothing changes, so you'll get identical features to those using the bulbs on another Android or iOS device. Certainly a commodity, but no one could blame you for wanting to add a pinch of geek spice to the season's festivities. Surprise! Video demo is after the break.

It's Free Shipping Day. Get Guaranteed Christmas Delivery from These Stores Today [Shopping]

It's Free Shipping Day. Get Guaranteed Christmas Delivery from These Stores TodayIf you didn't realize time is running out for holiday gift ordering, perhaps Free Shipping Day will remind you. The fourth shipping holiday this year is today, Friday, December 16th. Buy from a participating store for delivery by Christmas Eve.

A representative from Free Shipping Day wrote me that these are among the best shipping deals offered now, compared to what shoppers might currently or normally get from these shops:

  • Chico's - Free shipping on all orders.
  • Puma - Free shipping on all orders.
  • Hush Puppies - Free shipping plus $10 off your order.
  • Peruvian Connection - Free shipping and up to 40% off all orders.
  • Sierra Trading Post - Free shipping on all orders.
  • Disney Store - Free shipping on any order.
  • The Body Shop - Free shipping on all orders.

There are over 2,400 other online stores offering free shipping today, however, so you definitely have a lot more choices. The free shipping is offered within the contiguous United States.

Note that some stores notorious for being more risky when it comes to timely delivery are also participating in the pseudo-holiday, so it might pay, still, to consider not just the free shipping offer.

If you've been procrastinating about placing your online order, today's a good day to finally take shopping action.

Lucero Olive Oil Winter Crush draws 1,500

Vendors from several north state counties such as Bianchi Orchards of Dairyville and Tri-L Mandarin of Oroville offered samples and sold locally grown and made products during the Lucero Olive Oil s Winter Crush event Saturday. Guests were offered tours of the mill, cooking demonstrations and live music among other things. ( DN-Wagner )

CORNING - At least 1,500 people smelled, tasted and experienced a bit of Tehama County produce and culinary delights Saturday as Lucero Olive Oil hosted its first Winter Crush event.

Lucero offered cooking demonstrations, vendor booths, live music and tours of the olive oil processing mill.

Guests were given a chance to put on hair nets and actually see how Lucero adds fresh citrus to the olives before they are crushed to create the company's mandarin orange and Meyer lemon olive oils.

The event drew crowds from all over northern California.

Many came as part of tour in which several buses from Lincoln dropped passengers off at the event.

Lincoln residents Bonnie Rink and Judy Peck met on one

of the bus tours and were enthusiastic about heading inside for the olive oil mill tour.

The women had already been inside the gift shop sampling products and visited with vendors inside the mill.

"So far its been great," Peck said.

They were especially excited about dark chocolate walnut prune treats they'd bought from Bianchi Orchards.

"It sounds strange, but they were fabulous," Peck said.

The group had started the day with a visit to the Abbey of New Clairvaux in Vina before heading to Lucero's.

Although Rink had gone on wine tours, she'd never done anything like this before, she said.

She saw the advertisement in her local newspaper and thought it was a

great idea.

Author Carol Firenze Anglin of Los Gatos came for different reasons.

Owner and writer of The Passionate Olive, she was signing copies of the 8th edition of her book, a virtual encyclopedia of uses and praise for olive oil.

Along with her book, she was excited to offer a new iPhone app that allows anyone to find great olive oil vendors and producers in any area within seconds.

The app also gives links to many of the tips and ideas in her book.

Although Anglin lists Lucero Olive Oil as a quality vendor in her book and on the iPhone app, Saturday was the first time she'd actually made it to the mill in Corning, she said.

"It's a wonderful event," she said. "This is a great community."

There's a growing interest in olive oil, she said.

She brought along her friend Say Ota, president of Passionate Sweets, Inc. of Los Gatos, who gave samples of Dolce Amore candies made with olive oil instead of butter and all natural ingredients.

Many people from Chico joined in the event as well.

Steve and Debbie Sohn of Chico saw a poster about the event while having tea one day, they said. They went online and found out more about it.

It sounded like fun, Steve Sohn said.

"Everybody loves olive oil," he said.

The couple lived in the Bay area and Sacramento before they moved to Chico about four years ago. This event offered them similar culture and atmosphere as some events they might find in the cities, but it was just the right amount of people and a great atmosphere, they said.

It was hard to hear on the tour but it was very informative, Steve Sohn said.

However, the couple's favorite part was the tasting room, he said.

"I would have never thought they could put so many types of flavors in olive oil," he said. "Never would I think to just drink vinegar, but there was enough of a taste to do that."

There was something for the locals too.

A Red Bluff mother, Melinda Richardson, brought her three boys, ages 2, 4 and 6, to the event.

Although her mother knows some of the Lucero family, this was the first time they'd come to the mill, she said.

"It's bigger than I expected," Richardson said. "They have a really nice gift shop and it's beautiful out here."

They sampled oils and treats while the boys made bead and uncooked colored pasta necklaces in the children's craft area.

Richardson waited outside while her mother was buying a gift for her grandmother who lives in the Bay area.

The whole family enjoyed it, she said. "It's a nice, calm environment," she said.

The tour was interesting too.

"It smelled delicious inside, especially with the mandarin oranges," she said.

For more information about the company and/or future events go to lucerooliveoil.com or call the customer service line at 877-330-2190.

Muslim Brotherhood bends rules to win big in Egypt

Stringer/Egypt / Reuters

Women holding umbrellas stand in line during rain under an election poster by Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood "The Freedom and Justice Party'" outside a polling station as they wait to cast their votes during parliamentary elections in Alexandria on Monday.

By Charlene Gubash

CAIRO ? The Muslim Brotherhood has already started coloring outside the lines in order to win a majority in Egypt?s parliamentary elections.?

The organization, which gave its political branch the more ambiguous title, The Party of Freedom and Justice (FJP), is expected to win 40 percent of the seats in the lower house of parliament, according to?analysts estimates.? Official results from the first round of voting will be announced Thursday.

Based on our own observations at polling stations across Cairo and anecdotal evidence, they seem to have won support at the polls by bending the rules in their favor.

Free food and cheap meat
In Cairo?s Saida Zeinab neighborhood, at one of the busiest polling centers in the city, we saw a party member and two other supporters of an independent candidate passing out leaflets to voters waiting in long lines to cast their ballots ? in clear violation of election laws. Soldiers who were on site for crowd control, did nothing to stop them. At the same spot, a tech-savvy FJP member sat on a bench, laptop in hand, to conduct exit polls. At other polling stations, they provided polling information to baffled voters.?
?
In a more economically disadvantaged part of Cairo known as ?The Slaughterhouse,? Hanan Nasr, a mother of three, watched FJP members pass out free packages of rice and oil to voters on their way to the polling station ? again in contravention of campaign law. They also bussed in party members from surrounding neighborhoods.

Voter confusion played into the hands of the FJP. Many voters simply did not know who the candidates were because of the sheer number of mostly unknown candidates (4,000), unknown parties (35 new ones since President Hosni Mubarak fell from power) and a complicated voting system requiring choices of farmer, labor and independent candidates.?

Mohamed Abd El Ghany / Reuters

A woman casts her vote at a polling station during the second day of parliamentary elections in Alexandria, Egypt on Tuesday. Click on the photo to see a complete slideshow of pictures from the Egyptian election.

For those who did not understand the voting system, the FJP had people on hand before the election to explain how to make their ballots count ? for FJP candidates.

Although Nasr voted for a liberal party, her son, Ali, opted for the only party he was familiar with, the FJP.? Some FJP members had been signing up voters in Nasr?s neighborhood in the run up to the election and distributed free school supplies. And before the recent Eid al-Adha or Feast of the Sacrifice holiday, the one time of year when everybody in Egypt must have meat to celebrate the holiday, the FJP sold meat at half the market price to Cairo?s many disadvantaged.??
?
Clearly, the FJP struck a chord with voters.? Most of those we spoke to said they were voting FJP because they were well organized, helped the poor, and would uphold religious law.?

?They look to God,? said taxi driver Saad Abdul Aziz, who voted FJP.? ?They must be just.?

Muslim Brotherhood members distribute fliers to voters outside a polling station in the Manial neighbourhood of Cairo on Monday.

Shifting promises
In the wake of the revolution, the FJP initially promised to compete for only 30 percent of parliamentary seats, in order not to frighten civil society and the interim military government.? They gradually upped that figure to 100 percent.?

Likewise, a promise not to field presidential candidates was soon broken.? The FJP had joined a much larger political bloc of secular and religious parties running for president, but the alliance fell apart when the FJP tried to dominate party lists.
?
The official election results will be announced Thursday evening, but the FJP is expected to win big in Egypt?s two largest cities, Cairo and Alexandria.?

Since it?s a parliamentary system, their leaders have already demanded that if their party wins the largest proportion of seats as a party, they should be entitled to form the new government.

In view of the FJP?s track record of broken promises, many wonder what kind of government they would be and whether they will respect their promise to adhere to democratic process and take into account Egypt?s secularists and 10 percent Christian population.?

City, Liverpool reach League Cup quarters

By STEVE DOUGLAS

updated 6:30 p.m. ET Nov. 29, 2011

An emotional Craig Bellamy set up two goals in his first game following the suicide of friend Gary Speed, helping Liverpool win 2-0 at Chelsea on Tuesday night to advance to the English League Cup semifinals.

Bellamy missed Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester City because he was too upset to play following the death of Speed. The Wales manager hanged himself in his garage, a police officer said.

Bellamy held back the tears prior to kickoff on Tuesday as fans and players from both teams conducted a moving one minute's applause at Stamford Bridge in honor of Speed. Bellamy then set up goals for Maxi Rodriguez in the 58th and Martin Kelly in the 63rd, increasing pressure on Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas.

"Speedo was regarded as his mentor," Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish said of Bellamy. "To come back and play like that speaks volumes."

Andy Carroll wasted a chance to put Liverpool ahead, sending a 22nd-minute penalty kick straight at goalkeeper Ross Turnbull after Alex was penalized for a hand ball in his own penalty area.

Also in London, substitute Sergio Aguero scored in the 83rd minute as Manchester City won 1-0 and eliminated Arsenal in the quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons.

Samir Nasri, who left Arsenal during the summer to sign with Manchester City, was booed every time he touched the ball. Fans chanted: "You only quit for the money."

Nasri and Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong exchanged words in the tunnel after the match.

Second-tier Cardiff reached the last four for the first time since 1966 by beating visiting Blackburn of the Premier League 2-0 on goals by Kenny Miller in the 19th minute and Anthony Gerrard in the 50th.

Manchester United hosts Crystal Palace in Wednesday's quarterfinal.

___

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Barcelona bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 4-0 Spanish league victory over Rayo Vallecano.

Alexis Sanchez scored in the 29th and 41st minutes, his first goals since his club's league opener on Aug. 29.

David Villa made it 3-0 in the 43rd, and Lionel Messi added his 26th goal of the season in the 50th, tying Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo for the league lead with 16.

Coming off a 1-0 loss at Getafe that ended a 27-game unbeaten streak dating to April, Barcelona (9-1-4) closed within three points of Real Madrid (11-1-1). Barcelona has outscored opponents 34-0 at home in eight league matches this season and has not allowed a goal in 11 consecutive league home games since April 9.

The match was moved forward from Dec. 17-18 because Barcelona will be in Japan for the Club World Cup.

___

MILAN (AP) ? Goran Pandev scored twice for Napoli, which wasted a two-goal lead and wound up in a 3-3 tie with Serie A leader Juventus.

At Naples, Marek Hamsik put the hosts in front with a header in the 23rd minute and Pandev made it 2-0 in the 40th. Alessandro Matri cut the gap in the 48th, but Pandev scored his second goal in the 68th. Juventus rallied on goals by Marcelo Estigarribia in the 72nd, his first in Italian soccer, and Simone Pepe in the 80th.

Juventus (7-0-5) opened a two-point lead over AC Milan and Udinese (both 7-2-3). Napoli (4-3-5) is sixth, nine points off the lead.

In the fourth round of the Italian Cup, Verona won 2-0 at Parma and Novara won 3-2 at Catania.
