Massive storm wreaks havoc on presidential race

CELINA, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama frantically sought to close the deal with voters with precious few days left in an incredibly close race as this year's October surprise ? an unprecedented storm menacing the East Coast ? wreaked havoc on their best laid plans.

Ever mindful of his narrow path to the requisite 270 electoral votes, Romney looked to expand his map, weighing an intensified effort in traditionally left-leaning Minnesota. Obama sought to defend historically Democratic turf as the race tightened heading into the final week.

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, the two White House hopefuls reshuffled their campaign plans as the storm approached. Both candidates were loath to forfeit face time with voters in battleground states like Virginia, which is likely to be afflicted when Hurricane Sandy, a winter storm and a cold front collide to form a freak hybrid storm.

"The storm will throw havoc into the race," said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., noting that a Monday rally in his state with Obama and former President Bill Clinton has already been canceled.

Obama, preparing to depart for Florida a day early to beat the storm, followed up a morning church service with his daughters with a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's headquarters, where the president was briefed before speaking by phone to governors and mayors in affected states. Hours before rainfall was expected to begin, Obama declared a state of emergency in Maryland, freeing up federal funds to aid local response efforts.

"Anything they need, we will be there," Obama said. "And we are going to cut through red tape. We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules. We want to make sure that we are anticipating and leaning forward into making sure that we've got the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system."

An opportunity for Obama to demonstrate steady leadership in the face of a crisis was offset by the risk that the federal government, as in past emergencies, could be faulted for an ineffective response, with the president left to take the fall.

Obama canceled campaign stops Monday in Virginia and Tuesday in Colorado to monitor the storm but planned to go forward with other events Monday in Florida and Ohio, with Clinton at his side. He planned to return to Ohio on Wednesday with stops in Cincinnati and Akron, followed by a Thursday swing through Springfield, Ohio; Boulder, Colo.; and Las Vegas.

Romney nixed three stops in up-for-grabs Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to campaign with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio before heading Monday to Wisconsin, where the former Massachusetts governor has chipped away at Obama's lead.

"Let's today when we get home put in our prayers the people who are in the East Coast in the wake of this big storm that's coming," Ryan said in Celina, Ohio.

As Ryan discussed the approaching end of the race, the crowd erupted with chants of "nine more days."

Also vexing to Obama and Romney was the prospect that bad weather could hinder early voting and get-out-the-vote efforts, key components for both campaigns in the waning days of the campaign.

"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," said David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign. "To the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."

Boarding Romney's campaign bus in Dayton, Ohio, Sen. Rob Portman hedged when asked whether the storm could affect turnout in his hotly contested state: "We'll see. On early voting, it might."

Signs of the storm's enormity were quickly mounting. New York City prepared to shut down its mass transit system and ordered some residents to evacuate, while governors from North Carolina to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights in anticipation of the hurricane, which has already killed more than 60 people in the Caribbean.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, whose state is among the most competitive in the race, said intensive contingency plans would prevent the storm from undermining voters' ability to cast their ballots.

"We've got about 2,000 additional people that are coming into Virginia to help our power suppliers," said McDonnell, a top Romney ally. "The state board of elections is already planning for extended hours in advance for absentee voting, and it's now a priority, moved up to the same level as hospitals and police stations to have power restored."

Getting voters to the polls ? whether early or on Election Day ? is one of the few elements of the race still in the candidates' control with little more than a week left in the race. Although Romney and Obama are in a close contest for the popular vote, the president continues to have the upper hand in the handful of contested states where the victor will be decided. An Associated Press analysis shows Romney has fewer routes than Obama to reach the 270 electoral votes he needs to oust the incumbent, although the Republican has pulled even, or is slightly ahead, in a few pivotal states like Virginia and Florida.

With time running out, both campaigns appeared to be fine-tuning their map of the states where they're campaigning the hardest.

A senior Republican official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to disclose private deliberations, said Sunday that the Romney team was seriously discussing sending Romney, Ryan or both to Minnesota during the final week. The state hasn't gone Republican in the presidential race since 1972, but recent polling shows a tighter race there than most anticipated. Both campaigns are buying TV time in the state, but neither has dispatched a member of the ticket for a public event since Vice President Joe Biden visited in August.

In a flashback to the 2008 race, Obama's campaign announced that Biden will campaign Thursday in Pennsylvania, reprising a visit to his hometown of Scranton that he made during the final week four years ago. Pennsylvania too has been Democratic territory in recent years, but Romney has continued to contest the state, with an advertising assist from the Republican Party.

Eager to show energy and momentum on their side, both teams took to the Sunday talk shows to quibble over which candidate is faring better in state-level efforts to get supporters to the polls.

"Our people are coming out," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager. "Ohio, Florida, the first day of early voting in Florida yesterday ? record numbers of people are coming out to vote. It's something like we've never, ever seen. And that's a sign."

Reince Priebus, the GOP chairman, pointed to recent gains for Romney that have lifted him to a virtual tie in most national polls. "The challenger always wins in a tie race," he said.

Axelrod, Priebus and McDonnell spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Warner spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Cutter on ABC's "This Week."

He was asked about it again in weekend interviews, vowing to hold members of his administration accountable for any intelligence or military failures that might have led to the killing of US Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other embassy personnel on the anniversary of 9/11.

?What my attitude on this is is if we find out there was a big breakdown and somebody didn?t do their job, they?ll be held accountable,? Mr. ?Obama told MSNBC?s Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski during a New Hampshire campaign stop Saturday. ?Ultimately as Commander-in-Chief I am responsible and I don?t shy away from that responsibility.?

Meanwhile, the time it takes to conduct thorough investigations ? as yet incomplete ? has sparked much speculation and commentary, some of it informed but much of it strictly partisan.

?This is an appalling tale of, at the very least, gross incompetency and utter lack of transparency,? writes conservative columnist Jennifer Rubin in the Washington Post Sunday. ?President Obama, a little more than a week before the election,?won?t tell?Americans what happened. Well, why should he ? the press doesn?t hound him, the liberal elite still rushes to his defense, and his White House attack dogs bark ?Politics!? whenever legitimate questions are asked.?

From the left, writer and broadcaster Earl Ofari Hutchinson writes on his Huffington Post blog:

?President Obama's critics jumped on [recently released emails regarding the Benghazi attack] supposedly as smoking gun proof that the White House engaged in a massive cover-up to keep the truth from the American people.?

Report of China leader's family wealth may hurt image

China Daily via Reuters, file

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao shakes hands with local workers in earthquake-hit Mianzhu, Sichuan province in this Jan. 25, 2009 file photo.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

BEIJING ? When news broke earlier this year that the family of disgraced Chongqing party boss, Bo Xilai, had amassed $160 million in ill-gotten earnings, the story was seen as a proverbial pin in the balloon China?s ruling Communist Party has long floated to its people about its leadership.

In China the storyline went something like this: local-level officials could be and have been corrupted. But China?s highest leaders were incorruptible, pious men who were sympathetic to the plight of the country?s citizenry.

Bo?s corruption and the transgressions of his inner circle have been very publicly renounced by the Communist Party. His wife, Gu Kailai, was found guilty of the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood while his former deputy police chief, Wang Lijun, was jailed and held up as a traitor after his now infamous flight to the American Consulate in Chengdu this past winter.

News Friday that Bo had been stripped of his last party title appears to pave the way for a convenient resolution of the scandal before a critical once-in-a-decade leadership changeover on Nov. 8 at the 18th Communist Party Congress.

But the revelation in Friday?s New York Times that the family of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao controlled assets of at least $2.7 billion dollars posed a grave threat to the Party?s preferred narrative of being the honest broker that brings prosperity to all.

NYT report: China leader Wen Jiabao's family has amassed billions in assets since '98

So much so that Beijing was forced Friday to kick the censorship gears up a notch, blocking the English- and Chinese-language websites of the New York Times, blacking out mentions of the story on independent cable news channels carried in China, and censoring the names of Wen?s family and other mentions of the story on China?s Internet. ????

At a Foreign Ministry briefing Friday, a spokesman gruffly stated that the Times? report "blackens China's name and has ulterior motives." When asked why the paper?s website was being censored, he said, "China manages the Internet in accordance with laws and rules."

One piece of information not censored, however is a report released Thursday by the research group, Global Financial Integrity, which estimated $3.7 trillion dollars had been pilfered and smuggled out of China from 2000 through 2011.

The report also estimated that $472 billion -- or 8.3 percent of China?s 2011 gross domestic product -- had been stolen last year alone.

Just how guilty Wen is in his family?s nationwide money grab is up for debate. As the Times? report noted, a 2007 diplomatic cable published by Wikileaks quoted an executive who noted that the premier was aware of his family?s lucrative business ventures: ?Wen is disgusted with his family's activities, but is either unable or unwilling to curtail them."

Wen?s failure to reign in his family?s financial activities threatens to undermine the carefully scripted public persona he has cultivated over the years.

AFP - Getty Images

A click-through history of modern relations between the United States and China.

Nicknamed ?Grandpa Wen? by state media, the premier has relished opportunities to be photographed connecting with members of rural communities and blue-collar workers. During the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, he was a near-daily presence in news reports about the disaster and government rescue and recovery efforts.

He has also been dogged in his calls for economic reform and greater income equality. At this year?s National People?s Congress, during what was likely his last major press conference in a 45-year-long political career, Wen called for reform.

?Even with a single breath left, I am ready to dedicate myself fully to the cause of China?s reform,? he was quoted as saying.

Although Wen was speaking months before the release of the Times piece, he still apparently felt the need to address whispers about relatives trading on the family name. ?I have never pursued personal gain,? declared Wen, before adding, ?History will have the final say.?

Communist Party officials hope to control the writing of history. But the institution is starting to feel the strain of having to push an ever heavier stone uphill. The Internet has made information more widely available than ever before on the mainland; what censors just 10 years ago could make disappear ? sometimes literally -- has become more problematic today.

Still, while completely squashing a story in China seems to no longer be possible, it may not be Beijing?s intention or even in its best interest to stifle information. Some Chinese have found ways to circumvent the Great Firewall, while millions have gone abroad, where they have been exposed to the world beyond. Allowing them the safety valve of relatively free information does not pose an immediate threat to Party rule for now.

That?s because the vast majority of China?s population appears to be apolitical, disinterested in or unwilling to engage in any meaningful political discourse. This situation is changing, quickly at times.

For now, however, the censorship of unpalatable stories is an effective albeit cumbersome tool for the Party to wield.

As for the New York Times, its fate in China looks dim. Just two months ago, Bloomberg ran a similar story that showed how the family of China?s likely future president, Xi Jinping, had also accumulated a vast business fortune ? though unlike Wen?s kin, Xi?s immediate family did not appear to be reaping the same economic benefits.

Bloomberg?s website has since been blocked on the mainland.?

Scientists use molecular layers to study nanoscale heat transfer

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? Scientific research has provided us with a fundamental understanding of how light (via photons) and electricity (via electrons) move within and between materials at the micrometer or nanometer levels, making possible a wide variety of miniature devices such as transistors, optical sensors and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). However, man's knowledge of micro- and nanoscale heat flow is rudimentary at best. Now, a research team at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has developed a novel system for examining and measuring nanoscale thermal conductance at the interface between two materials. With further refinement, the scientists believe their advance may one day provide data for applications such as harvesting electricity from waste heat, better cooling of microelectronic devices and "heat-seeking" targeting of disease cells by hyperthermal (above normal body temperature) therapeutics.

The team's findings will be presented by Mark Losego, formerly a post-doctoral fellow at UIUC and now a research assistant professor in chemical and biomolecular engineering at North Carolina State University, during the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28-Nov. 2, 2012, in Tampa, Fla.

At the nanoscale, thermal properties are the result of vibrations between neighboring atoms. Bonds between atoms carry these vibrations similar to an oscillating spring. The UIUC team developed a technique for studying the effects of these bonds on heat transport across an interface between two different materials. "We wanted a system where we could observe, analyze and quantify thermal flow across an interface with atomic-level precision," Losego says.

The system starts with a substrate base of quartz crystal, upon which the researchers place molecular chains that are 12 carbon atoms long. At the base of each chain is a chemical "cap" that covalently bonds to quartz. The attraction of these caps to the substrate spontaneously aligns all of the carbon chains into an ordered array of molecules known as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM). At the opposite end of each carbon chain is a different kind of cap, either a thiol (sulfur and hydrogen) group that bonds strongly to metals or a methyl group (carbon and hydrogen) that bonds weakly.

"We then make use of a viscoelastic silicone stamp to 'transfer print' gold layers onto the SAM surface," Losego explains. "This process is similar to transferring a decal onto a T-shirt where the gold film is the 'decal' attached to the silicone stamp 'backing'. When we slowly peel away the silicone, we leave the gold layer on top of the SAM."

It is at the interface between the gold film and the SAM, Losego says, where nanoscale heat flow is characterized. "Changing the chemical groups that are in contact with the gold layer allows us to see how different bonds affect heat transfer," he adds.

Combined with an ultrafast laser technique capable of monitoring temperature decay (or heat loss) with picosecond (trillionth of a second) resolution, the UIUC researchers are able to use their experimental system to evaluate heat flow at the atomic scale. "We heat the gold layer attached to the monolayer and can monitor temperature decay with time," Losego explains. "Concurrently, we observe oscillations in the gold film that indicate the strength of the bonds at the gold-SAM junction. Using these measurements we are able to independently verify that strong bonds [fast-decaying oscillations] have rapid heat transfer while weak bonds [slowly decaying oscillations] have slower heat transfer."

The researchers plan to refine their nanoscale thermal measurement system and develop theoretical calculations to better interpret the data it produces.

Buying bread and dodging snipers: 7 vignettes of life in war-torn Aleppo

A Syrian records the devastation along a sniper alley in Aleppo's Al Shaab district, as the intense human and material cost grows from three months of intense fighting against rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Aleppo, Syria, on Wednesday. (Scott Peterson/The Christian Science Monitor/Getty Images)

His assault rifle propped beside him and a pistol in a shoulder holster, the rebel commander races his car through war-ravaged Aleppo districts like he owns them.

At street corners and roundabouts, he brakes hard as fighters of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) call out his name, reach their hands across the passenger seat, and squeeze themselves across to kiss Abu Haidar?s bristly cheeks.

Rebels claim to ?control? more than half of Aleppo in their fight to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. But that is a misleading term that does little to explain the spectacle of Aleppo?s human suffering.

?Bashar al-Assad doesn?t have an army, only snipers, artillery, and airplanes,? says Abu Haidar.

Yet with these tools of war, Assad has defined lives of misery for those who remain in this contested city.

Weeping has become a fact of life in Aleppo. So has the constant sound of explosions, which reverberate deeply through the psyche of Syria?s second city, an economic hub, control of which is critical to the final direction of this 20-month uprising against Assad?s rule.

Trash piles ever higher on every street, as quickly as the nationwide death toll, which the UN estimates to be 20,000; activists number more than 35,000 dead. Yet in this crucible of a population under extreme stress, life goes on: vegetables are bought and sold, coffee is boiled and served slow, kebabs are roasted over coals, children play games in narrow alleys. While dodging snipers, citizens also walk and shop, take taxis, and pray that the water, the electricity, the phones won?t be cut to their neighborhoods. And there can be dark humor ? something that Iraqis perfected in the past decade ? that helps people here cope.

Every day, the vast majority of Aleppo?s 2.5 million citizens who remain live to see the next sunrise. How do they do it?

The Onion Shows Off the GOP's Hot New Voter Suppression App

If the GOP wants to win big on election day, it's going to have to do everything in its power to keep minorities from voting. But as The Onion rightly points out, its voter suppression methods are in drastic need of modernization. That doesn't mean the jokesters can't conjure up VoteRite, a fictional app that's tailor-made for disenfranchisement. Luckily for democracy, the GOP's dream app doesn't exist yet. More »

Nexus 4 appears early at Carphone Warehouse, October 30th release date

Whoa there! The next Nexus just got an early reveal over at UK retailer Carphone Warehouse. Delivery is currently pegged for October 30th and apparently it's got brand new Android 4.2 (or Android 4.1.2 -- the listing mixes in both). The preorder screen confirms plenty of details we've already heard, including that 4.7-inch 1,280 x 768 display, Snapdragon S4 processor and 8-megapixel camera. Unfortunately, at least according to the phone seller, there's only 8GB of storage and no microSD card slot. Other curious parts include a "360-degree camera", whatever that is, and an on-screen render that's been previously been identified as a custom ROM. Diving into the supposed feature list, we're intrigued to see whether "gesture typing" will form a part of Google's new Android build -- the Carphone Warehouse compares it to Swype's finger-dragging input method.

Price-wise, it looks like you could get the handset for free on contracts over £31 per month, with both O2 and Vodafone named as prospective networks for the device in the UK -- but no news here on whether the 4G-capable EE will offer an LTE iteration. Excited? Good, because we're going to hear plenty more on this next week.

Comprehensive Survival Food List & Storage Guide | USAHM ...

Rady Ananda
Activist Post

Survival food storage practice doesn?t require Mormon membership, but the tradition, wrought from their first Utah winter, is worth emulating should disaster strike or technology fail, two survival books by Mat Stein. This guide, Part 2 of my survival series, relies on Stein?s books, and websites dedicated to survival preparedness.

At its most basic, food storage wisdom demands that you buy what you eat, and organize and label the boxes or bins with contents and date. Stocks should be rotated based on shelf-life longevity. Using Stein?s general guide, when properly packaged and stored, various foods last several months, years or decades, as follows:

10 years or longer: Honey, sugar, salt, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce and wheat berries.

5-10 years: Most dried legumes and whole grains, dehydrated cheese, instant or vacuum-packed coffee, baking powder, powdered eggs and frozen butter.

Up to 5 years: Processed (partially hydrogenated) liquid vegetable oils, Crisco shortening, cornmeal and corn flour, and nonfat powdered milk.

2-3 years: Bullion cubes, cornstarch, white rice, powdered gelatin, white wheat flour, white flour pasta, tapioca, textured vegetable protein, hydrogenated peanut butter, catsup, canned salmon and sardines, most dried fruits, and most other canned foods except meats, some fish and fruits, as well as sprouting seeds (alfalfa, mung, soybean, wheat, etc.).

Up to 18 months: Canned meats and seafood (halibut, mackerel, tuna and shrimp), unshelled raw nuts, dry active yeast, bagged snack chips, cake mixes, dry pudding, herbal and black teas, bottled juices, most seasonings and extracts, jams and jellies, canned non-citrus fruits (blackberries, blueberries, cherries, pears, peaches, plums, etc.), cranberry sauce, pickles, canned rhubarb, and sauerkraut.

One year: Canned nuts, breakfast cereals, rolled oats, bottled dressings, mayonnaise, natural liquid vegetable oils, candy bars, bottled juices (grapefruit, pineapple, apricot, orange), canned citrus fruits and natural nut berries.

Six months: Most boxed food, fresh potatoes, granola, shelled raw nuts, and unshelled roasted nuts.

Studies by the Brigham Young University Dept. of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Science observes that proper packaging, storage methods and temperatures should yield the following storage capacities:

30 years or more: Whole grain wheat and white rice that has been packaged to remove oxygen and stored at room temperature or cooler.

Up to 30 years: beans, dried apples, macaroni, potato flakes and oats.

20-30 years: freeze-dried foods.

Up to 20 years: properly stored nonfat dried milk.

Baking powder will store for ?many years? and baking soda will keep indefinitely. Most food stores longer under cool, dry and dark conditions.

Either of Stein?s books is worth owning for the section on root cellars and other cold storage (above- and below-ground), which is accompanied by detailed diagrams and tips, depending on the environment.

Of note, compromised cans should be avoided. Don?t waste money on dented cans, and never eat from cans that bulge, leak or spit at you when opened. Most US canaries use BPA, a ?known endocrine disruptor that affects hormones and could be causing breast and prostate cancer, heart disease, brain retardation, impotence and infertility.? BPA-free cans are available.

Modern Survival Blog recommends clear, see-through bins to keep track of what you have, given that most folks need to see what the have to avoid over-buying one staple and not enough of others. They also recommend a variety of survival foods including bulk, ready-to-eat, dehydrated and freeze-dried foods.

Stein also provides a chart for using dry ice fumigation to protect against pests, and spends considerable time discussing the various packaging methods, most of which can be done in the home.

MREs

?Meals ready to eat? are ideal when you have no stove and little or no water, or if you?re on the move.

After Hurricane Isaac, camouflaged men with no identifying insignia passed out boxes of food made by Sopakco. These MREs come fully prepared and include a magnesium heater bag for the main course, with each side dish individually wrapped ? scissors not included, but needed. Only the powdered beverage requires water.

One full meal packet provides 1,200 to 1,300 calories, so you?d need to eat two or three a day to maintain your weight, depending on how many calories you?re burning through.

The meals are varied and palatable, even though stuffed with unpronounceable chemicals and genetically modified organisms (GMO). But, remember, this is emergency food ? not food on which humans thrive. Each meal comes with crackers or bread, cheese and peanut butter, a powdered drink, and the main course which could be imitation boneless pork rib, grilled beef patty, sloppy Joe, chili and macaroni, vegetarian ratatouille or beef ravioli in meat sauce.

The box comes with 14 meals (a 7-day supply for me), which you can buy online for about $70, and the whole thing weighs under 20 pounds. It?s got an 8-year shelf life (if stored between 33 and 50 degrees F; otherwise as low as one-month if stored at 120 degrees).

The heater bag is an MRE?s best feature. Patent No. 5611329 by TrueTech, Inc. uses pulverized magnesium, food-grade iron and sodium which, when combined with a tiny amount of water, reacts to produce scalding heat. According to one site, these heater bags have a 5-year shelf life, and pose not only burn risk, but also risk of explosion as they release hydrogen gas during the reaction. So keep the bag away from spark or flame when ?cooking? your meal.

Dehydrated Food

A 14-pound bucket of Augason Farms dehydrated food costs $65, and provides over 2,000 calories a day for twelve days. Budget-wise, this is a much better deal than a box of MREs. The reusable plastic bucket with a watertight lid, and the 25-year shelf life, make this kit a superior choice if you?re not on the run, and you have measuring cups, pans, a stove and water.

Eight varieties of food are included, each in its own resealable pouch. Scissors not needed. However, not all the mylar bags were labeled, which only adds to the stress of having to eat emergency food. On the plus side, the federal food stamps program (now called SNAP) does cover the purchase.

While these foods are also preserved with chemicals and GMOs, Augason does not add hydrogenated oils, trans fats or MSG. The food is nitrogen flushed and packed with oxygen absorbers.

All the food is pretty tasty, and the brown sugar oatmeal was so delish that I added a fresh container of rolled oats to my diet. The cheesy broccoli rice dish only has wisps of broccoli, so I simply mixed it with the beef-flavored vegetarian meat substitute. Sounds gross, I know, but damn it tastes good, just like you?d expect a Whopper? to be deliciously deadly.

Organics and Seeds

Northbay Trading sells organic survivor food, but for many the cost is prohibitive. Mat Stein recommends storing and rotating sproutable seeds and provides a how-to section.

Most seeds will sprout in 2-5 days, but be aware that non-organic potatoes and tomato sprouts are poisonous, having been treated with fungicide. Stein recommends 20-50 pounds of sprouting seeds and supplies for a one-year supply for an adult male.

?Grains and legumes are probably the most compact and inexpensive type of food that can be stored for emergency preparedness,? he writes, noting that, ?most nutritious in their raw form, sprouts can be saut?ed, stir-fried, boiled or cooked into almost any dish,? providing ?a source of garden-fresh veggies any time of the year.?

Ten Staples and Water

Activist Post recommends these ten foods available at your local grocer: rice, beans, cornmeal, lard, salt, white and brown sugar, and canned meat, fruit and veggies. Buy a healthy supply of each that you can rotate over time.

Survival food storage can?t be fully discussed without mentioning water. The bare minimum is a gallon a day per person, and double to triple that if you?re relying on dehydrated foods. Ure and Levy provide an in-depth discussion of water storage HERE. Take note, though, that most plastic jugs in the US contain BPA (like canned foods), so be sure to buy BPA-free jugs.

Some preppers lay in food stocks that will cover them for a year or more and with today?s food technologies, this is entirely possible and easily doable. I?d also recommend not storing all your eggs in one basket; in other words, store your food and water in different places to avoid losing everything in one disaster that affects that room.

Factbox: Fed officials' comments on U.S. economy, policy

(Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve launched a new round of monetary stimulus last month and said it plans to keep interest rates low through at least mid-2015 to put the economy back on firmer footing.

The central bank's new bond-buying program calls for $40 billion in mortgage debt purchases per month, to be augmented as needed, until it sees a significant improvement in labor market conditions.

Fed officials meet again next week to discuss policy.

The following are recent comments from Fed policymakers. An asterisk next to a name denotes the person is a voting member of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee this year.

SAN FRANCISCO FED PRESIDENT JOHN WILLIAMS, October 15

"In no way has our commitment to price stability wavered."

ST. LOUIS FED PRESIDENT JAMES BULLARD, October 15

RICHMOND FED PRESIDENT JEFFREY LACKER, October 15

"Simply observing a high unemployment rate does not imply that the Fed's monetary policy is failing to comply with its congressional mandate, nor does it necessarily mean that monetary policy needs to do more to achieve its goals."

NEW YORK FED PRESIDENT WILLIAM DUDLEY, October 15

"If we were to see some good news on growth I would not expect us to respond in a hasty manner."

FED CHAIRMAN BEN BERNANKE, October 14

"It is not at all clear that accommodative policies in advanced economies impose net costs on emerging market economies."

RICHMOND FED PRESIDENT JEFFREY LACKER, October 12

"Such language could be misinterpreted as suggesting a diminished commitment to keeping inflation at 2 percent...I would oppose adopting such a stance, and I do not believe my colleagues on the FOMC intended that interpretation."

PHILADELPHIA FED PRESIDENT CHARLES PLOSSER, October 11

"In fact, some are interpreting the FOMC's statement that we will keep accommodation in place for a considerable time after the recovery strengthens as an indication that the Fed is focused on trying to lower the unemployment rate and is willing to tolerate higher inflation to do so...This is another risk to the hard-won credibility the institution has built up over many years, which, if lost, will undermine economic stability."

FED GOVERNOR JEREMY STEIN, October 11

"It appears that the economy is growing at a pace such that, absent policy action, progress on reducing unemployment will likely be slow for some time...Given where we are, and what we know, I firmly believe that this decision was the right one."

FED VICE CHAIR JANET YELLEN, October 11

"Spillovers from Europe and a still-depressed housing market also help account for our tepid recovery and elevated unemployment."

DALLAS FED PRESIDENT RICHARD FISHER, October 10

"The great inhibitor of job creation is the uncertainty over taxes and spending and regulation that plagues businesses."

SAN FRANCISCO FED PRESIDENT JOHN WILLIAMS, October 10

"You would expect inflation to fluctuate within some kind of reasonable band, so say between 1.5 percent and 2.5 percent. Even in normal situations, inflation tends to fluctuate because of various shocks and events."

NEW YORK FED PRESIDENT WILLIAM DUDLEY, October 5

"While there are several headwinds that have been restraining economic growth, a key impediment is that the housing market has failed to respond fully to the significant easing of monetary policy."

FED GOVERNOR ELIZABETH DUKE, October 5

"Doubtless there will be costs associated with solving these problems (in the housing sector), but it is important to also consider the costs of doing nothing."

ST. LOUIS FED PRESIDENT JAMES BULLARD, October 4

"Distant inflation expectations from the TIPS (Treasury inflation protected securities) market seem to suggest that investors do not completely trust the Fed to deliver on its 2 percent inflation target."

MINUTES OF SEPT. 12-13 FEDERAL OPEN MARKET COMMITTEE MEETING, released October 4

"Most participants agreed that the use of numerical thresholds could be useful in providing more clarity about the conditionality of the forward guidance but thought that further work would be needed to address the related communications challenges."

Sneezy from fall allergies? Hit the beach! (Seriously) - TODAY Health

Getty Images stock

Get thee to a beach! The humidity will help ragweed allergies.

By Emily Main
Prevention

Fall means apple cider, back to school, the fresh smell of fallen leaves--and the return of allergy season. Approximately 10 to 20 percent of the public is allergic to ragweed, the most common culprit in fall seasonal allergies, and studies are finding that ragweed season is lasting as much as 15 days longer than in earlier decades in some regions of the country. Rain, which washes pollen out of the air and so is generally welcomed by ragweed allergy sufferers, leads to the proliferation of mold, another seasonal allergy trigger.

Crush these common allergy culprits

Whether it's ragweed, mold--or both--that gives you the allergy blues, here are five ways to prep yourself now, before fall allergens have a chance to make you miserable.

1. Stock up on butterbur. If mold, but not ragweed, makes you teary-eyed, try butterbur tablets, a botanical remedy. The British Medical Journal published a study in 2002 finding that leaves and roots of the butterbur bush, native to Europe, northern Africa, and parts of Asia, worked just as effectively at reducing hay fever symptoms as cetirizine, the active ingredient in Zyrtec, without causing drowsiness. Butterbur belongs to the same family as ragweed, however, so people allergic to ragweed may actually get worse after taking it.

2. Plant cover crops. Ragweed really is a weed; it flowers from mid-August to late October, before the first frost. One plant's pollen can travel up to 400 miles, so it's unlikely that you can avoid it completely. However, you can keep ragweed from taking root in your yard or garden by planting cover crops after you harvest your garden's summer vegetables. Cover crops also keep your soil healthy for next spring's planting season. Try clover, rye, buckwheat, or a mix of field peas and oats.

The Best Seasonal Allergy Meds

3. Put dead leaves to use. Wet piles of fallen leaves are prime breeding grounds for leaf mold, and while leaf mold is valuable to your soil, it can send you into a frenzy of sneezing fits if you're allergic. Clean up fallen leaves promptly, before they get wet and moldy; better yet, get someone who's not allergic to do it. Pile up the leaves in an out-of-the-way place so you can use them for mulch next spring, or make a true compost heap to transform them into fertilizer for your garden and lawn. (Shred them so they'll compost quickly; run them over with a lawn mower.) Keep your pile covered so any mold spores will stay put.

Get a Grip on Mold

4. Clean your filters. Staying indoors when pollen counts are high is the most effective way to cut down on both mold and ragweed reactions--but not if you're pumping in pollen from outside. Take the time now to clean or change your air conditioner and furnace filters, since ragweed pollen persists long after the hot temps turn cold. You'll cut down on pollen inside your house, and you'll lower your energy bills; clean filters allow both your heating and cooling systems to run more efficiently. This in turn uses less fossil-fuel-powered energy.

5 Allergy Fighters You May Not Have Thought Of

5. Head to the beach. Humid beaches can be problematic for mold-allergy sufferers, but they can make a welcome respite for the ragweed-allergic, as the humidity levels generally keep pollen counts to a minimum. The National Allergy Bureau maintains a database of pollen counts online, so you can check allergen levels in both your hometown and beach or vacation destinations.
