US Particle Colliders In Need of Funding

Sadly, politicians do not realise that.

Research is about finding new things about the universe and this accelerator does not compete with that. They are different machines, made to examine different pieces of the universe and by adding the findings we learn more than if we had only one or two accelerators.

Sadly, funding is tied to "highest energy", "longest tunnel", "highest temperature" and those who cancel the projects do not get that it actually is not about "Hehe, now we showed them damned europeans/ame

S. Africa uses apartheid-era law against 270 miners

A group of men carry on Friday the coffin containing the body of Mpuzeni Ngxande, one of the 34 striking miners killed by police fire on Aug. 16, in front of the informal settlement near the Lonmin mine in Marikana where the workers were shot.

By Rohit Kachroo, NBC News

JOHANNESBURG -- South African authorities on Thursday?invoked a legal move seldom used since the dying days of apartheid in order to charge?270 striking miners with the?murder of 34 co-workers who were seen being shot dead in a hail of police bullets?earlier this month.

Prosecutors have filed papers using a measure called "common purpose", arguing the miners were complicit in the killings since they were arrested at the scene with weapons.

Legal experts said the move will likely collapse when a court hearing bail applications for the 270 near the mine resumes sessions next week and lambasted prosecutors for inflaming a tense situation by seeking a mass indictment that will eventually be rejected.

PhotoBlog: Miners gather to pray for South African shooting victim at site of violence

Pierre de Vos, a law expert at the University of Cape Town, wrote in a blog?that the decision to charge the miners was "bizarre and shocking and represents a flagrant abuse of the criminal justice system, most probably in an effort to protect the police and/or politicians ..."

Eighteen years after the country's first free and fair elections, the decision to charge the miners is raising questions about the direction of South Africa's democracy and the rights of the poor in the world's most unequal country.

"The apartheid state often used this provision to secure a criminal conviction against one or more of the leaders of a protest march, or against leaders of struggle organizations like the ANC," de Vos wrote in reference to the African National Congress, which was then a guerilla group in opposition to the apartheid regime but which is now the ruling party.

Pressure on Zuma
President Jacob Zuma and the ANC have faced increasing pressure over the killings, which are the deadliest security incident since apartheid ended in 1994, with many saying the government may be more concerned about protecting its own than miners in shafts.

PhotoBlog: Mourners pay tribute to victims of South Africa mine shooting

The government has launched a probe into the killings, including the deaths of 10 people ahead of the Aug 16 shooting at Lonmin's Marikana mine, northwest of Johannesburg.

Memorial services will be held for the 34 South African platinum miners gunned down by police last week. The country's embattled President Jacob Zuma visited the mine, promising a full judicial enquiry while reassuring international investors that South Africa was open for business. But the price of platinum on world markets surged - as reports suggested strikes were spreading to other mines. Inigo Gilmore, Channel 4 Europe reports.

It is withholding any police punishment until the investigation is over, which is estimated to be sometime in early 2013.

Mine 'bloodbath' shocks post-apartheid South Africa

But after heavy criticism in the South African media, the government appears to be attempting to distance itself from the decision to charge the miners.

On Friday, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said the National Prosecutions Authority (NPA)?must explain why the murder charges were brought.

"There is no doubt that the NPA?s decision has induced a sense of shock, panic and confusion within the members of the community and the general South African public. It is therefore incumbent upon me to seek clarity on the basis upon which such a decision is taken," Radebe?said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate, a government watchdog, said it had received nearly 200 complaints from the arrested miners of being assaulted and abused while in custody.

Patrick Craven, National Spokesperson for the Congress of South African Trade Unions said his organization was "absolutely outraged at the decision."

After a violet pay dispute left 34 dead and 78 injured in South Africa, Police say they were "forced to use maximum force to defend themselves." ITN's Neil Connery reports.

He said prosecutors "should have waited for the findings of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry ... before jumping the gun and laying such charges. It is showing its contempt for the?Inquiry?and potentially jeopardizing its independence and relevance by pre-judging the arrested workers on the basis of their own version of the facts."

Craven added that his confederation of unions "also restates its concern over the allegations about the bad conditions in which the accused workers are being held in custody and demands that they should be released on bail immediately."

Criticism
Zuma?s government may find it difficult to escape criticism over the killings.

A commentary by Nic Dawes, editor of Johannesburg?s influential Mail and Guardian newspaper, argues that the aftermath of the massacres poses political dangers to the ANC.

"What will happen when the ANC and its trade union allies are no longer unquestioningly accepted as the sole legitimate representatives of poor? When the store of liberation credit has been drawn down so far that it can no longer stand surety for 'a better life' that arrives too incrementally and too unequally?"?Dawes asked in the article.

"The killings at Marikana and their political aftermath may at last force us to confront the real consequences of declining alliance credibility," he wrote.

Turf war
Fewer than 7 percent of Lonmin's 28,000-strong South African workforce reported for duty on Thursday as the platinum producer held talks with warring unions, attempting to cool tensions and bring people back to work.

The world's third-largest platinum producer has been forced to shut its mining operations for almost three weeks because of a violent turf war between the established National Union of Mineworkers and militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, which led to the deaths of 44 people this month.

"We have a 6.6 percent average attendance across all shafts this morning," Lonmin said in a statement.

Peace accord
The talks to end the impasse in the platinum mining city of Rustenburg, northwest of Johannesburg, resumed Thursday after dragging into the night on Wednesday.

Officials in South Africa confirmed today that 34 people were killed and 78 injured when police opened fire on striking uranium miners and supporters they allege charged at them. TODAY's Natalie Morales reports.

Gideon du Plessis, deputy secretary general of trade union Solidarity, said discussions are to secure "a return to work agreement -- with the aim of getting workers back to work on Monday after most funerals have been concluded."

Squalor surrounds South Africa's platinum treasure chest

He said the grievances raised by the striking workers would then be dealt with and, finally, a peace accord would be reached.

Solidarity represents skilled workers, and its members have not been on strike, but all unions are taking part in the talks.

The 3,000 strikers who have brought things to a standstill are mostly rock driller operators, who demand a monthly wage of 12,500 rand ($1,500), which would amount to a hike of more than 25 percent over what the company says it currently pays, excluding bonuses.

Lonmin accounts for 12 percent of the global output of platinum, used in car catalytic converters and jewelry.

Culture and the Dead and Dying ? Invisible Ink

The City of the Dead, Osseti, Russia

Life and death are the only two real facts in our world. You were born, and you will die. The same can be said for your characters, unless they?re immortal (but even then, immortality usually implies they won?t die of old age or disease, and nothing about being killed). My culture views death negatively; we don?t even like to say the word. We call it ?buying the farm? or ?biting the dust? and when someone dies, we have elaborate rituals to honor the passing and give solace to the still living. Not all cultures treat death this way though, and I remember the first time I realized this. I was reading a short story several years ago that detailed an old Eskimo grandmother walking out into a snowstorm one afternoon. The family did not react, but they all knew where she was going, and the story, written from the perspective of a young girl, revealed that the grandmother had known it was her time, and had gone out to embrace the passing as was their tradition. It wasn?t sad, it was just a fact of life.

I?m at a point in my novel that I?m looking at the death of a semi-main character. Her name is Nellana, and she is the High Priestess of the mainstream religious order in the northern lands. She?s also my protagonist?s grandmother and a much-loved woman. She leaves her home in the heat of spring to help in the south where an epidemic is spreading and within days of arriving is captured by native officials, who do not view her kindly. Eventually she is burned at the stake as a witch, something that is viewed as not only hostile but also heinous by Nellana?s own people.

Nellana?s family will have nothing left of her physical body when the flames burn down, but there are still rituals to be performed. But what they are I cannot say because I have not taken the time to decide what kind of death rites honorable priestesses might receive. I also haven?t given any thought to how her body being so desecrated might change their usual ceremonies. Thus, let?s look at some different beliefs and traditions related to the dead.

?

What are some of the different death and burial rites?

  • In the Tana Toraja region of Indonesia, burial ceremonies are large and costly events. Most families don?t have the money immediately ready for the ceremony, so it is acceptable for them to keep the newly deceased in their home while they save up, which can take anywhere from a few days to years. The dead are treated like sick elders, included in daily activates and conversations.
  • The Sokushinbutsu Buddhist monks have an interesting take on death that?s called self-mummification. The process is started several years before the planned death with a strict regiment designed to eliminate body fat and fluids. The first step consists of rigorous physical activity and eating only nuts and fruits. The second step includes bouts of vomiting and drinking a poisonous tea to prevent insects from taking up residence. When the monk is deemed ready, he then enters a stone tomb to sit in the lotus position and wait for death. Each day, he rings a bell to let his fellow monks know he is still alive. When the day comes that there is no bell, the monks seal the tomb for 1,000 days, before re-opening it to confirm the mummification.
  • Santhara is the Indian rite of fasting to death, and usually takes around 13 days. This rite is usually begun when a person feels their life has run its course and they are no longer needed, so it?s generally frowned upon as a form of suicide.
  • A tower of silence

Zoroastrians believe burying or burning the dead will pollute the earth and fire elements, so instead they take their dead to a raised structure generically referred to as the Tower of Silence. This practice only exists in the Indian subcontinent now, as the dwindling number of vultures in India makes the process more gruesome and drawn out.

  • In the isolated Gizel Valley in Northern Ossetia, Russia, in the early 18th century, a plague swept through the land. There were so many sick that the clans built quarantine houses for them, where they were provided food and water, but kept under lock and key. Inside these slanted-roof huts are the mummified bodies of those who did not survive, dressed in their Sunday best with their hair neatly done.
  • All across northern Europe you can find murky bogs that claimed the lives of hundreds of travelers. But some people were buried there on purpose. The chemical makeup of the bogs actually preserves human flesh rather well, making this another form of mummification.

How are they remembered when they?re gone?

  • An America-based company called LifeGem now offers grieving family members the option to wear their lost ones in the form of a diamond ring. The diamond is synthesized from the carbon of the body or cremated remains. You can also memorialize your pets this way.
  • The Terracota Army

The First Emperor of China was buried with all his treasures in a tomb with pearl-laden ceilings to represent the cosmos, and channels dug into the ground with flowing mercury to represent the rivers of China. The most fascinating part of the tomb however, are the 8,000 individual life-like and life-size statues of soldiers popularly known as the Terracota Army. Local farmers in Xi?an discovered the vast underground tomb in 1974 while they were drilling for water.

  • The Capuchin monks in Palermo, Italy mummified the bodies of the dead, dressed them in everyday clothes and put them on display, hanging them on the monastery walls. Apparently it was quiet the status symbol to end up on the wall, because important citizens would leave instructions to have their clothes changed on a regular basis to keep up with the latest fashion. This practice lasted up into the late 1800?s, and when the last mummy was placed on the wall there were at least 8,000.
  • The Malagasy from Madagascar actually take their dead from their tombs every seven years to dance with them in a ritual called Famadihana. It is considered a family reunion.
  • In some Chinese regions, death is like a rite of passage and a man?s honor and prestige are linked directly with the number of people who attend his funeral. So living family members would invite strippers to swell the numbers.
  • The Vikings sent their warriors out to sea in great long ships, placing things like weapons and treasure around them. ?Once loaded down, the long ships were sunk in a harbor or burned on the water?this one being the source of the fabled Viking funeral pyre.

What are some of the different common understandings of death?

  • In the Victorian era, all the clocks in the room where a person died would be stopped to prevent bad luck.
  • The Victorians also photographed their dead because it was usually too expensive to document one?s life in photographs.
  • Aboriginal people will not show a deceased person?s image or use his/her name, for fear that either might invoke the spirit to come back.
  • Many Native American tribes believe that the spirit never dies, and so when the physical body no longer lives, they associate the spirit with an animal or a plant.
  • The ancient Chinese buried their leaders in suits made of jade.
  • Some cultures leave their dead out in the wild to be consumed by other animals. In Tibet, this is called a ?sky death? and it is believed that those who are eaten by dogs will be better off in the next life.
  • In some African tribes, it?s a common practice to tie the mouth shut for fear of the spirit escaping, and/or to prevent hovering evil spirits from entering the body.

Top 5 Weirdest

  • A cryonic container

Cryonics is the practice of freezing the body, and right now is only legal when done on a personal pronounced clinically dead. Shortly after death, the body is stored in liquid nitrogen to prevent decay and then frozen. The idea is that someday science will find a way to reverse death.

  • Plastination is a relatively controversial preservation method developed by German scientist Gunther von Hagens. The process involves dissecting the body into smaller parts, embalming it with a hardening fluid and then reposing the body parts into an educational pose.
  • You can now have your ashes launched into space to permanently orbit around the earth, like Gene Roddenberry?s were. Although, there are still flaws with this burial method. The orbit of the capsule containing Roddenberry?s remains and those of 22 others deteriorated just five years being launched and disintegrated in the atmosphere.
  • A Swedish company called Promessa offers the option of completely breaking down the body and burying it in a cornstarch urn, making for a completely bio-degradable burial.
  • Soap people?yes, soap people. Some actually turn into soap when they die, usually because of large deposits of fat during the time of death.

These are just a few of the death customs I found while researching, and I?m curious if anyone is aware of any others we can add to the list.

Funding to Active and Safe for Life ? Physical Literacy

Unintentional Injuries among Children and Youth in Canada

Sports- and recreation-related injuries make up a significant proportion of unintentional injuries for children and youth up to age 19. In fact, 40% of child and youth injuries treated in Canadian emergency departments are sport and recreation related. While the Government of Canada encourages Canada?s children and youth to become more active and live healthy lifestyles, it is also important they are safe while being active.

Through the Public Health Agency of Canada?s?Active and Safe?injury prevention initiative, the Government of Canada is investing $5 million over two years to support a number of community-based projects that empower Canadians to make safe choices when they get involved in sports and recreational activities. Today?s announcement of nearly $200,000 will support a project that enhances skills, knowledge and attitudes of children and youth, known as physical literacy, so they can be active and safe while participating in sports and recreational activities.

Active and Safe for Life ? Physical Literacy Project

This project will be led by Canadian Sport for Life, with support from Canadian Sport Centre Pacific in partnership with Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, Physical & Health Education Canada, Lakehead University, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the Play Safe Initiative, Respect Group Inc., the Sandbox Project, the BC Sport Agency and Sport Newfoundland and Labrador.

Project activities include:

  • integrating injury prevention messaging into physical literacy materials previously developed by these organizations;
  • facilitating the adoption of recommendations for the appropriate use of sport equipment and facilities for 30 sports; and
  • reviewing the rules of play in four sports (soccer, lacrosse, rugby and baseball) to increase injury prevention awareness and promotion.

Our Mission

To make Canada the healthiest place on earth for kids to grow up.

The Sandbox Project will provide the leadership to act as a catalyst for change in Canada. We will work directly with parents, business, health industry leaders, governments and non-governmental organizations to raise awareness, pursue research, collaborate to develop solutions and better public policy.

A library is not a luxury, but one of the necessities of life. ? Henry Ward Beecher

I can?t imagine what my life would have been like without libraries; simply put, I would never have become a writer. Even as a child, libraries inspired my imagination to wander down endless mental corridors, exploring rooms of wonder that I never knew existed. Igniting my curiosity, fueling my burgeoning passion for new words and new worlds, libraries have always been a necessary part of my life.

While libraries nurtured me as a writer they still play an important role in my writing life. Yes, they remain a source of research for me but they also have become a way for me to connect directly with my readers. Writers rarely get the chance to meet and speak to their readers but over the last several years I have given presentations about ghosts and ghost hunting?extremely popular topics these days?in over eighty libraries in my home state of Ohio, as well as in libraries in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Florida. The audiences have ranged in size (the largest was 72 people, the smallest 6) but in almost every instance the sponsoring librarians have told me that the numbers in attendance exceeded their expectations.

Part of the reason for that is the subject matter itself; it seems that everyone wants to hear a good ghost story. But there is another reason, I believe. In times of economic hardship, as we are facing now, many people simply can?t afford a night out for entertainment. When the local library offers a free and interesting program?whether it be about ghosts or some other topic?people recognize a deal that just can?t be beat. Such programming is a win-win situation. Patrons are treated to an enjoyable night out while the library draws many people who might not normally come to the facility---and once there, they have the opportunity to find out about all the other programs the library offers and to realize that, oh yes, there are books and DVDs aplenty and they?re all available free!

Form, Function, Comfort, Family? - Cy-Fair Lifestyles & Homes ...

?

Houston?s sixth Pink Ribbon House?, a designer showcase home built to ?raise the roof? for breast cancer research at The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), did just that. Established in 2003 by the Breast Center Advisory Council at BCM, the Pink Ribbon House? (PRH) project raises funds and awareness for breast cancer research and patient care at BCM through the design, decorating and touring of showcase homes. Since its founding, more than $2.8 million has been raised for breast cancer research at BCM.

Chair of this year?s event, Debby Leighton, and co-chair Mary Sapp Fischer share, ?The story surrounding this year?s house is a combination of perfect timing, personal connections, and family connections.? In previous years, the PRH was built as a spec home, but this year, for the first time, it was built as a custom home designed by Brad Hollenbeck for a young family with three small children.

Homeowners Jeff and Amy Miers couldn?t have been happier. ?We?re thrilled to be building the home of our dreams while also supporting a cause that makes a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of so many women and their families,? says Amy. Jeff adds, ?This land has special meaning for our family. Several years ago, we purchased the Memorial area house that my grandparents built and lived in since 1960. We hope to live here at least as long as my grandparents, which was more than 50 years.?

The couple salvaged several features from the previous home, including wood from a tree Jeff?s grandparents planted when they bought the house in 1959. The homeowners also repurposed hardwood floors for the office, and 1950?s pink tile and hardware for one of the bedroom suites. The entire structure of the original house ? including slab, appliances, light fixtures and more ? was donated to Habitat for Humanity, which will either recycle the material or use it in the construction of a new home for a family in need.

Jeff and Amy worked closely with an outstanding team of interior designers to create a home for their growing family now and in the years to come. However, they also recognized that this was a showcase home and compromised in many ways to make sure the finished product would represent the creativity and talents of the design teams.

Designed by Hollenbeck Architects, the 2012 Pink Ribbon House? was constructed by Levitt Partnership, Ltd. in a French Country style. The 5,000-square-foot residence features a stone and stucco exterior with shutters, five bedrooms, five-and-a-half bathrooms, two studies and three fireplaces, as well as a summer kitchen, playroom, three-car garage, game room, and dining room that opens up to a courtyard with a water feature. An impressive list of Houston designers helped to decorate the home and yard, and each took an area as their focus incorporating not only their own unique design touches, but also making sure to keep the entire home?s aesthetic as a dominant influence.

The outdoor space is extraordinary, lending undeniable curb appeal. Strong Landscaping has designed Houston yards since 2004 and their experience is not lost here. The outdoor setting of the PRH is a beautiful corner lot surrounded by magnificent oak trees. Strong explains, ?We wanted to give the yard its own personality by feeding off the home?s French Country flair, so we created a simple tiered design featuring Encore azaleas, miniature boxwood and mini-mondo grass with strategically placed flagstone walkways and landings that are not only functional, but provide interest to the yard.? The courtyard off the formal dining room ? accented with a decorative iron arch and gate as well as a beautiful water urn ? can be enjoyed not only by those sitting in this peaceful area, but also by those in the dining area. The back patio, landing area and side garden are accented with large French Anduze pots planted with ferns and fruit trees.

The home?s exterior design also is extraordinary. Valerie Cook of Valerie Cook Designs, Inc. discloses, ?The early inspiration for the architectural design for this house was the client?s desire to have courtyards off both the living room and quarters and a large front porch. Through the building process an additional courtyard was added off the dining room. Having the house located on a corner lot is another special feature.? She also says that the ?hideaway? staircase and the placement of the windows reflect a gentle playfulness by the architect ? while still maintaining a formality. The French Country style of the house, the paint colors, and the exterior and courtyard stone selections were made to be consistent with this feeling. Valerie adds, ?My design of the custom shutters and door hardware selections throughout the house continue the formal, rich and inviting look that the clients desired. Working in conjunction with the home?s architect, Brad Hollenbeck, enabled me to retain his vision.?

Trisha Dodson of Dodson & Daughter designed the main entry, dining room and powder room. This is the third Pink Ribbon house Trisha has helped to design. She describes the style as comfortable and inviting, yet sophisticated, and she likes to incorporate architectural antiques when the look allows. She explains, ?I wanted to create an inviting entry that would flow into the surrounding rooms. In the dining room the lighting and furniture give a look that is elegant without formality. I used handcrafted wallpaper in the powder room to add the desired pizzazz to the small space.?

Julia Blailock of Blailock Design was responsible for the kitchen, breakfast and family room, along with the outdoor loggia. ?Our goal was to create a flowing open concept space that, while sharing distinct separate functions, would seamlessly flow together in a unified whole.? Interest was created by having different planes in the cabinetry, further accentuated with different finishes and countertop selections. The focus of the family room is the stone fireplace and media cabinet, beautifully finished by Segreto Finishes. The tall ceilings with stained beams add loftiness to the room, and the straight paneled drapery compliments this feeling.

The mudroom and first floor study were designed by the daughter-in-law and mother-in-law team of Molly Sullivan Levitt and Mollie Oshman of Molly Mollie Interior Design. Their concept statement was, ?Even though our two rooms are exceptionally practical spaces, we wanted our design to be anything but.? Though an ?elegant mudroom? may sound like an oxymoron, that?s exactly what they achieved. The pair also made sure that everything they selected for their two adjoining spaces was in keeping with the home?s architectural style. Mollie Oshman shares, ?From the French-inspired cabinet door designs and antique fabric under glass in the study to the faux finishing and scripted names beneath the family?s bank of ?elegant lockers? in the mudroom, these rooms are an inviting and welcoming transition to the main areas of the home.? Sadly, Molly Levitt passed away unexpectedly in March just before the home opened. Mollie Oshman continues to run their business in Molly?s spirit, honor and dedication.

In addition to the home?s exterior, the playroom and the quarters (bed/bath) were designed by Valerie Cook. In the playroom, which is usually intended for children, Valerie admits she didn?t want this multipurpose space to be age-specific, but rather in keeping with the overall feel of the home: ?I designed it to be fun for the children now and fun for them in later years.? A custom built-in bookcase design was based on the clients? request for a piece that encompasses specific needs while still having something that was a bit out of the ?norm.? Valerie accomplished this by adding metal grid fronts on the cabinet doors and the cabinet finish. Whimsical pops of color, together with her concept for the crown molding and wall faux finish ? inspired by an Escheresque origami art installation ? add to a room that a child or adult would be comfortable in.

For the design in the quarters area of the home, Valerie wanted to create coziness, but with a little bit of ?glam? and the overall feel of a studio apartment. To accomplish this she used silver fabrics for the upholstery and window treatments, as well as stylish, glitzy light fixtures. She clarifies, ?The plaster faux-finished walls, bedding and chair style are a perfect mix of old and new that the clients wanted, and the tile and countertop selections for the bathroom and
kitchenette maintain the design and sophistication of these two spaces.?

Bennett Design Group (BDG), founded by Belinda Bennett, took to task the upstairs family room. Belinda recounts that in preparation for the new house, the owners heartbreakingly cut down one of the original trees ? one that was very meaningful to the family. She says, ?They loved watching squirrels run up and down the large branches of the beautiful tree.? The design team salvaged the large trunk and branches to create a ceiling covered in spliced branches making an interesting texture. Keeping this memory close at hand by recycling it brings new life to their family space. BDG constructed a palette of naturally-inspired elements around the tree of life which served as the central theme of this room?s design.

Julie Dodson, also of Dodson & Daughter, was in charge of designing the master bedroom and bath, along with the mid-level study of the home. This young, hip designer ? who describes her work as ?casual glam?? says, ?Upon my first meeting with homeowner Amy Miers, I paid super close attention to her wardrobe. She was wearing a soft, blushy-peach pleated skirt and a cream-colored top with pearls. Very feminine, which was right up my alley!? Julie was also inspired by wallpaper they found at David Sutherland from Fromental, which she says gave her direction. Because she also wanted the space to reflect a masculine energy for Jeff, she chose a dark wall and ceiling color. Additionally, both masculine and feminine textures were used for balance and interest.

The three children?s rooms and the utility room were completed by Christine Ho of Cho Interiors. She describes her style as classic, timeless, and modern. This style is evident in these rooms, yet each room is also uniquely fun and reflective of each child?s personality and taste. She explains, ?I wanted to give the homeowners a timeless design so that they wouldn?t have to redesign their kids? rooms in a couple of years as the children grow older.? Instead, she selected a classic background and used accessories to create the theme of the room. From the eldest sibling, who is more punk rock-like, to the second child, who is more of a ballerina at heart, to the youngest boy, who likes toy cars and hot air balloons, each room is very different reflecting each child?s emerging personality.

As for the utility room, Christine says, ?I designed the utility room by focusing on the function of this room first. This utilitarian space often gets ignored, yet oddly enough this room is used quite often. I wanted to make sure that the space simplifies household chores while flowing with the rest of the house design.?

The finishes throughout the home are by Leslie Sinclair of Segreto Finishes. Leslie?s philosophy in this home and in all of her designs rests upon the idea that ?upon entering a room, your eyes should not draw a distinction to one element or finish but you should see the surroundings as a whole.? The palette she developed for this project complemented the home?s architecture and overall design. A combination of the cabinet, floor and wall finishes beautifully connect the furnishings, fabrics and surfaces throughout the home, even though each space is decorated by a different designer.

Other unique architectural details of this home are: front and back porches with arched beams, a two-story entry with an antique-beam pinwheel ceiling treatment, and the study connecting the home?s curved staircase and master bedroom.

This year, the Pink Ribbon House? tour ended on a very high note, bringing in more than $470,000 for research and patient care at the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at Baylor College of Medicine (bcm.edu/breastcenter). The success of the event is attributed to the camaraderie of the team of volunteers, builders, designers and the homeowners who devote countless hours to organizing the event that raises funds and awareness for a very important cause ? breast cancer. The 2012 Pink Ribbon Home is a French Country dream situated on a large corner lot and shaded by beautifully groomed oak trees.

The two-story entry with its antique-beam pinwheel ceiling treatment creates an inviting entry that flows effortlessly into the surrounding rooms.

With its warm wood ceiling, stone walls and fireplace, comfortable furniture and dramatic lighting and drapes, it?s hard to believe this outdoor room is actually outdoors!

Simplicity of design and form make a bold statement in the breakfast room. The circular window seat with its plush pillows, the glass table top with its Lucite base, the soft lines of the contemporary chairs and even the singular blue rose on the wall each lend warmth and comfort to this morning place.

In the kitchen, interest was created by having different planes in the cabinetry, accentuated with different finishes and different countertop selections. The exposed beams, the dropped lighting and the furniture afford just the right touch of drama.

A mudroom can be elegant, as is evident here. Embellished lockers, a pleated table skirt and a gilded mirror help to achieve this sophistication, which spills over into the home office just beyond.

In the home?s formal dining room, the lighting and furniture present a look that is sophisticated and graceful without formality. With the beautiful views from the picture windows and French doors, it?s as enjoyable and feasible to serve breakfast here as well as a formal family dinner.

In this baby boy?s room, baby blues and white are accented with pops of sage green in the drapes and brick red in the rug. The geometric lines of the light fixture add a masculine touch, while the fabric wall behind the bed and the clouds in the recessed ceiling keep things baby soft.

Pretty pink accents, girlish white lace and a glamorous chandelier provide soft femininity to this girl?s room. The diagonal pattern on the recessed ceiling, the pinboard and the drapes ties together the room?s design.

With pastel mint and blue as a backdrop, this white canopy bed bursts with brightness and youthful energy. The mirrored chest of drawers reflects the dramatic combination, while hot pink accent pillows provide just the right pop of color.

This master bedroom serves as a sanctuary for the homeowners. Soft, calming neutrals and a mixture of textures lend both masculine and feminine energy to the space.

Spa-like elegance is the theme in the master bath. The chevron tile pattern, a deep soaking tub and glamorous lighting are tranquil elements of design that go a long way when it?s time to wind down.

(AP) ? In an isolated stretch of Jordanian desert, a heavily guarded, secret compound houses 1,200 senior police and army officers who defected from nearby Syria.

The men live in trailers with fans but no air conditioning, surrounded by barbed wire, and they pass their days browsing the Internet and watching TV for news of Syria's civil war, longing to join the fight ? but they are largely unable to leave.

The Jordanian military runs the camp near a site formerly used by the U.S. to train some its forces for the war in Iraq, and the defectors are debriefed by intelligence agents. Access to them is tightly restricted for their own protection. They are even separated from their families, who live outside the camp near the northern border city of Mafraq but can get special police permits to visit.

The defectors in the camp are allowed to communicate with the rebel Free Syrian Army in Jordan and abroad, both in person and through telephone and Internet communications, but do not have what is considered valuable intelligence, according to Jordanian security officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not allowed to make press statements.

The facility is a sign of Jordan's growing role as a quiet supporter of Syria's opposition. But at the same time, Jordan wants to avoid aggravating tensions with its more powerful northern neighbor, fearing that President Bashar Assad may remain in power.

There are more than 160,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan, and their number is increasing by the thousands every day. About 8,000 live in a newly set up camp on the border, while the rest are scattered across Jordan.

Maintaining control over the refugees poses a security threat to the small, tightly controlled kingdom. Jordanian security officials and refugees have said there were pro-Assad "sleeper cells" in Jordan that could act against the refugees.

Jordan has rejected several requests by the Assad government for the extradition of the defectors and has allowed entry to hundreds of Syrian rebels who move freely around the country. It also has helped the refugees by giving them medical treatment.

It is not clear if former Syrian Prime Minister Riad Hijab, the most prominent defector to flee to Jordan, is housed in the desert facility or one elsewhere. Hijab fled under a plan coordinated between the Amman government and the Free Syrian Army.

The Associated Press asked to visit the desert facility but was denied access. However, the AP spoke to two of the camp residents who described the conditions there.

Khaldoun, a 47-year-old former Syrian army brigadier, said there were dozens of trailers housing up to seven men each, with fans stirring the desert air. Armed Jordanian soldiers guard the compound around the clock, he said.

The men spend their days exercising and playing backgammon and chess, and the Jordanians provide them with access to the Internet, TVs, cellphones and computers, said Khaldoun, who insisted on being identified by his first name only, citing concern for the safety of relatives in Syria.

"It's good to be here, away from the tension and war, but this is not what I had hoped for," he told the AP.

"I wanted to be part of the rebel movement fighting to liberate Syria," Khaldoun added. He said he spends most of his day watching TV, exchanging gossip, or browsing the Internet for news on the violence back home.

"It's difficult to watch the war in Syria on TV and the Internet and not be part of it," he added.

Khaldoun defected to Jordan in January at the height of the Assad regime's crackdown on his hometown, the central city of Homs, which became the hub of the uprising that began in March 2011. Hailing from a prominent Sunni Muslim family, he served in the 7th Armored Division for 23 years until his escape.

The security defectors range in rank from corporal to general ? but they said their access to state and military information was limited because as Sunnis they were kept in the dark by the inner circle of the ruling Alawite minority ? a Shiite Muslim offshoot ? that surrounds Assad.

The Jordanian security officials said access to the defectors was restricted because of concerns that pro-Assad elements could try to attack them.

A series of attacks on Syrians in Jordan has led refugees and Jordanian officials to believe agents of the Assad regime are operating in the kingdom on a campaign to hunt down opponents and intimidate those who have fled. Jordan has also arrested supposed defectors on suspicion that they were spying on Syrian refugees and dissidents.

The camp housing the defectors is near Jordan's largest air force base, which had been used as a training facility for U.S. forces in the past two decades during and after the wars in neighboring Iraq.

Jordanian government officials have refused to comment about the desert camp, saying that they have little information about the defectors.

The camp's refugees fled in batches since the uprising began, with most of them smuggled through a northern border fence by the Free Syrian Army and later interrogated by Jordanian intelligence to verify their identities and the authenticity of their stories, one of the Jordanian security officials said.

The defectors are between 40 and 60 years old, and some have chronic ailments such as high blood pressure, diabetes and back problems that prevented them from being in the frontline in Syria or joining the rebels, the officials said.

A handful of other senior military and police defectors are kept at a secret location elsewhere, one of the security officials said, including Syrian air force Col. Hassan Hammadeh, who flew his MiG-21 to Jordan on June 21.

Most of the defectors were seen as "small fish" who for the most part did not provide actionable intelligence, according to the Jordanian security officials and a Jordan-based Western diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity because identifying him would compromise his ability to gather information on Syria.

Still, one of the defectors at the desert compound said that as a colonel in the military, he held such a high rank that the Assad regime would go to great lengths to strike back at him.

"They would destroy a whole suburb if they think one of us is there," said the colonel, who identified himself only as Rahal, citing fears of retribution against relatives still in Syria.

"This is why I had to get out of Syria," he added.

Rahal said he and 37 other officers were jailed shortly after the start of the uprising, but a number of them were given amnesty and released in May. The regime told him to report to work but merely shuffled him from one office to another, he said.

"I had no real job, just drinking tea and watching TV," the 45-year-old said.

He said he decided to defect when the security forces "decided to militarize the conflict in order to end the crisis."

Rahal predicted the Free Syrian Army would ultimately get the weapons it needs to finish off Assad.

"The Free Syrian Army is like a group of birds on a tree. If the regime tries to shoot one of the birds, the group flies off to another tree. The regime will never get them all," he said.

Organized Clutter: Framing a Potholder

Organized Clutter: Framing a Potholder

Framing a Potholder

I am starting to post my fall decor this week. ?

First of all, let me tell you that I live in a small town of about 6,400 and possibly up to 9,000 or 10,000 with small surrounding towns. ?I must travel at least 100 miles to shop somewhere other than Kmart, Ben Franklin Crafts, and consignment shops for home decor and craft supplies. ?That's why I am resourceful! ?

Yes, I framed a Kmart sunflower potholder in an 8 x 10 Kmart light wood frame today! ?The over sink shelf is new too! ?Well, new to me! ?$3 at the consignment shop. ?This one started out like this:I forgot to take a before pic, but I found one just like it on Ebay. This is the old over sink Martha Stewart Kmart wood shelf and before vignette.I used a potholder/oven mitt with a sunflower from Kmart for $3.99, and an 8 x 10 frame for $3.99 from Kmart in a light wood frame to match my kitchen cabinets. ?I cut a piece of burlap to fit the frame and pushed it in the frame with no glass. ?Then I used double stick carpet tape to adhere the potholder to the framed burlap. ?

I painted the shelf with Rustoleum black chalkboard paint, distressed it lightly and then covered it with Lundmark paste wax. ?

I dug into my button stash for some rusty brown, gold and yellow buttons in sunflower colors for the jar. ?The pitcher with wood utensils and rooster metal paper towel holder were already part of the kitchen.

Have you ever framed a potholder?

Economics News from the Desk of Elena Panaritis, 27-08-2012 ...

The Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, is expected this week to return back into the fray of domestic policies, after the charm offensive visits to Berlin and Paris, where Mrs. Angela Merkel and Mr. Francois Hollande expressed their support for Greece?s membership in the Eurozone as long as the country meets its commitments to its international creditors.

The French President mentioned that Greece?s position is in the Eurozone without questions, but it has to demonstrate the credibility of its program and the willingness of its leaders to go the whole way. He, also, mentioned that a decision on further rescue aid to Greece would depend on a report to be compiled by the Troika, in the late of September or early October.

The difficult task, this week, for Antonis Samaras is to persuade his coalition partners, Evangelos Venizelos and Fotis Kouvelis about the necessity of the new measures for 2013 and 2014 that have been demanded by the Troika. The Greek Prime Minister and Yannis Stournaras, the Greek Finance Minister, want the new measures, spending cuts and reductions to pensions and benefits, to be voted by late September or early October. On the contrary, Venizelos and Kouvelis, who object to some proposed measures, expressed their opinion that they prefer these measures being approved in chunks, in order to lessen their social impact.

Two days after her meeting with Mr. Antonis Samaras, Angela Merkel sent a warning to allies who believe that the Eurozone will be better off without its weakest link, by mentioning that this is a crucial phase in combat against the Eurozone crisis and everyone should weigh their words carefully. She, also, gave her support the ECB?s President, Mario Draghi, and believes that the European Central Bank?s policies are in line to ensure stable prices in the bloc.

After the Meetings of Antonis Samaras with Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande, some political leaders begun to express their support to Greece. Austria?s Chancellor, Werner Faymann, mentioned that Greece should stick to its agreements with the Eurozone, and in return Greeks should get more time for the payment.

Germany?s Finance and Economy Ministers mention that they are opposed to any easing of the timeframe for Greece. According to their belief, by giving to Greece more time, this would automatically mean giving Greece more money. But, the Greek Prime Minister was quite clear when he said that Greece needs more time but no more cash.

There really is nothing wrong with beginning to live independently and starting off with buying and using second-hand items, your house included.

New Old House

If you are on the lookout for buying your very own home check out the classified ads or talk to realtors directly. Once you see the house that you want and if it is within your budget range, make sure that everything inside is still safe.

Hiring an electrician in Perth and having your house checked must be on the top of the priority list. You don't want your house burned down to the ground because of faulty electrical wiring. The electrician can also rewire your house and help you install your entertainment system (used or repaired), smoke alarms or just do a routine maintenance check-up to help you feel at ease that your house is electrically sound.

You can make an old house look like new once again. Every house has its own personality, get to know your "new ?old' house" and bring out its personality partnered with yours.

It doesn't matter if you can't afford a brand new house, the important thing is that you make it a home and you can call it your own. Just make sure that everything is working properly and that you are safe inside your home.

Used appliances

When furnishing your home, you can start by buying appliances that are not brand new. Of course when you can afford to buy it new, then by all means do so. The point is that there is nothing wrong with used items. If you have an old and broken TV, before throwing it away, consider having it repaired. TV repairs in Perth can be easily found everywhere. There are also shops that would go to your home and repair it on site.

Even your living room can be furnished with used items. If you see a couch or a living room set that is being sold cheaply at flea markets and you can see that it can still be repaired, then think outside the box and have it re-upholstered. Re-upholstering can be cheaper than buying brand new.

The possibilities are endless if you know how to save money and do things on your own.
